Unter dem Dachbegriff Environmental Humanities (EH) haben sich im zweiten Jahrzehnt des 21. Jahrhunderts eine Vielzahl von Fächern und Fachrichtungen zusammengeschlossen, um die gemeinsame Beschäftigung mit der ökologischen Krisensituation in all ihren Facetten sichtbar zu machen und neue Wege der interdisziplinären Kooperation zu erproben, mit dem Ziel, der Herausforderung einer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit zu begegnen. Zweifellos gilt der Verbund der stetig wachsenden Environmental Humanities heute als einer der dynamischsten und innovativsten neuen großen Forschungsbereiche, den Universitäten national und international zum Aushängeschild für interdisziplinäre Brückenschläge zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften sowie Gesellschaft und Politik machen wollen.
Jedoch ist aufgrund der rasanten Entwicklung der EH die Vielzahl der involvierten Disziplinen, Subdisziplinen und interdisziplinären Forschungsfelder kaum mehr zu überblicken, und für die kursierenden Terminologien fehlen Verständigungsgrundlagen, die für den interdisziplinären Dialog ebenso wie für die Wissenschaftskommunikation in die Gesellschaft hinein unentbehrlich sind.
Daher soll das Live Handbook den mehrfachen Zweck erfüllen, einen Überblick über die Forschungsfelder und damit befassten (Sub-)Disziplinen zu schaffen sowie zentrale Begrifflichkeiten und Methoden zu klären, um sie für verschiedene Geistes-, Sozial- und Natur-wissenschaften anschlussfähig zu machen.

This is an Open Access Book. In this landmark new work, the major authorities in the field from around the world present a wealth of research data, coverage of regulatory issues, and thinking about the effects of man-made noise on marine mammals, turtles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates. The various themes of the book were chosen to cover the wide range of basic and cutting edge information on this topic. They include the hearing abilities of aquatic animals; communication by means of underwater sound; the description of aquatic soundscapes; different sound sources and their characteristics; the effects of sound on behavior; and assessing, mitigating, and monitoring the effects of aquatic noise. Emphasis is on the cross-fertilization of ideas and findings across species and noise sources. With over 180 contributions from leading researchers, the sources of underwater sound and their effects are discussed in detail.

The open access book invites readers to critically address the new model of a Sustainable Circular Economy also from the legal point of view, tracing new perspectives in order to fairly orient the law in this systemic paradigm transition.
The paradigm shift towards a Sustainable Circular Economy is at the core of the EU policy agenda, aiming at revolutionizing the whole economic productive model that characterizes our contemporary society. However, the legal dimension is often underestimated in this framework. Actually, the legal system cannot resort to old schemes if it wants to respond properly to new challenges. In order to achieve effectively the indicated objectives of social progress, it is decisive that also the legal dimension of a Sustainable Circular Economy, and so the regulation of the market and the society on which it impacts, is designed consistently with an innovative approach. That is why this research intends to promote a general reconceptualization of existing legal configurations, exploring new perspectives to strengthen the role of individuals in the socio-economic system, as aware ‘human’ beings that, as such, take care of the world they live in.

This open access book follows the development of the Building Resilience in Teacher Education (BRiTE) project across Australia and internationally. Drawing on the success of this project and the related research collaborations that have since emerged, it highlights the importance of cultivating resilience at various stages of teachers’ careers.
Divided into three sections, the book includes conceptual, empirical and applied chapters, designed to introduce readers to the field of research, provide empirical evidence and showcase innovative applications. The respective chapters illustrate the ways in which teacher resilience can be enhanced in a variety of contexts, and address specific learning activities, case studies, resources and strategies, student feedback and applied outcomes. They also consider future directions including cross-cultural applications and the use of technologies such as augmented reality. The book will appeal to researchers, teacher educators and teachers, as well as those interested in supporting the cultivation and ongoing development of professional resilience for pre-service and practicing teachers.

From the beginning of the 19th century to the present day, a host of campaigners have denounced the mistreatment of animals. Relying on a comparison between the British and French experiences, the present work retraces the various strands of the animal protection movement, from their origins to their continuing impact on current debates. Inextricably linked to the rise of philanthropy, and well established long before the birth of the ecology movement, the story of the collective mobilizations behind the struggle for animal rights sheds light on several crucial processes in our social and political history: changes in sensibilities and socially approved emotions; the definition of what constitutes legitimate violence; the establishment of norms designed to change what constitutes morally acceptable practices; rivalry between elites having differing conceptions of the forms authority should take; the influence of religious belief on militant activities; and the effects of gender discrimination.

Covert Plants contributes to newly emerging discourses on the implications of vegetal life for the arts and culture. This stretches to changes in our perception of ‘nature’ and to the adapting roles of botany, evolutionary ecology, and environmental aesthetics in the humanities. Its editors and contributors seek various expressions of vegetal life rather than the mere representation of such, and they proceed from the conviction that a rigorous approach to thinking with and through vegetal life must be interdisciplinary. At a time when urgent calls for restorative care and reparative action have been sounded for the environment, this essay volume presents a range of academic and creative perspectives, from evolutionary biology to literary theory, philosophy to poetry, which respond to the perplexing problems and paradoxes of vegetal thinking. Representations of vegetal life often include plant analogies and plant imagery. These representations have at times obscured the diversity of plant behavior and experience. Covert Plants probes the implications of vegetal life for thought and how new plant science is changing our perception of the vegetal — around us and in us. How can we think, speak, and write about plant life without falling into human-nature dyads, or without tumbling into reductive theoretical notions about the always complex relations between cognition and action, identity and value, subject and object? A full view of this shifting perspective requires a ‘stereoscopic’ lens through which to view plants, but also simultaneously to alter our human-centered viewpoint. Plants are no longer the passive object of contemplation, but are increasingly resembling ‘subjects,’ ‘stakeholders,’ or ‘actors.’ As such, the plant now makes unprecedented demands upon the nature of contemplation itself. Moreover, the aesthetic, political, and legal implications of new knowledge regarding plants’ ability to communicate, sense, and learn require intensive, cross-disciplinary investigation. By doing this, we can intervene into current attitudes to climate change and sustainability, and hopefully revise, for the better, human philosophies, ethics, and aesthetics that touch upon plant life.
